North Carolina License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in North Carolina?

Renewal extends the vehicle registration for one year. The license plate remains the same; NCDMV issues a new registration document and sticker for confirmation. Title transfer is a separate transaction and does not occur during renewal.

  • North Carolina operates on an annual cycle according to N.C.G.S. § 20-87, where each vehicle is assigned an expiration month linked to the owner’s birth month.
  • Private passenger vehicles, motorcycles, light trucks, trailers, and low-speed vehicles are renewed annually. Plug-in electric vehicles renew on the same annual schedule but have an additional electric vehicle fee of $214.50 per year.
  • The state’s “Tag and Tax Together” program combines registration renewal and the county vehicle tax into one combined bill, as published on the NCDMV registration page.

When Do You Need To Renew Your North Carolina License Plate?

NCDMV sends a combined renewal and property tax notice before the registration expires. The vehicle must pass inspection within 90 days before expiration for the system to process the renewal.

  • You can renew as soon as you receive the notice, but the inspection record must be within the 90-day window before the plate’s expiration date. Find a station via the NCDMV emissions and safety inspections page.
  • Vehicles registered in 19 North Carolina counties must undergo an emissions inspection along with a safety inspection; all other counties require only a safety inspection.
  • There is a 15-day grace period for operation under N.C.G.S. § 20-66(g), but late fees begin accruing from the expiration date: $15 if less than one month late, $20 from one to two months, and $25 from two months and beyond, according to N.C.G.S. § 20-88.03.
  • Interest also accrues on late renewals at 5 percent for the first month overdue, then 0.75 percent per month until paid in full.

How To Renew Your License Plate in North Carolina

Confirm your vehicle has a current inspection in the system and your liability insurance is active before starting. Prepare your renewal notice or registration card with your plate number and the last five digits of the title number.

  • The online portal myNCDMV processes most renewals for passenger vehicles. You will confirm the plate number, title digits, and insurance before paying by credit or debit card. Fees in the next section include a $3 PayIt transaction fee plus 1.85 percent card processing for online users.
  • Self-service kiosks at selected locations accept the same information and print your registration and sticker on the spot. Locations are listed on the NCDMV office locator.
  • At any license plate agency, bring your renewal notice and payment. Staff accept cash, checks, and cards and issue your updated registration immediately.
  • Mail the bottom portion of your renewal card with a check or money order to NCDMV Vehicle Services, PO Box 29620, Raleigh, NC 27626-0620. Allow 20 business days for documents to arrive.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in North Carolina?

Registration fees and county property taxes come on one bill, and the property tax portion varies significantly depending on the county and vehicle value. The base state fee is just the first layer.

  • Private passenger vehicles pay a fixed $46.25 per year according to N.C.G.S. § 20-87(5). Motorcycles have a base of $25.50 plus $4.00 for the safety program, totaling $29.50.
  • The county vehicle tax is assessed on the vehicle’s market value by the county tax assessor as published at the time. The amount varies by county and vehicle; some owners pay more for property tax than registration fees.
  • Electric vehicle owners add $214.50 upon renewal; plug-in hybrids add $107.25, according to N.C.G.S. § 20-87(13) and (13a).
  • Late renewal adds a fee from $15 to $25 to the total bill, plus interest accruing monthly according to the schedule in N.C.G.S. § 20-88.03.
  • Specialty plates add approximately $20 to $30 per year depending on the design, and personalized text adds $30 per year. Both are added to the base registration fee upon renewal.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in North Carolina?

Most passenger vehicles and light trucks can be renewed online via myNCDMV at payments.ncdot.gov. The portal accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. New registration documents arrive by mail within 20 business days.

Vehicles with registration blocks (unpaid fines, lapsed insurance, or missing inspection) cannot be renewed online or through any other channel until the block is cleared. The NCDMV registration stop list details each type and how to resolve it.

Two alternatives cover what the portal does not process:

  • Visit any license plate agency with your renewal notice and payment. Staff process renewals the portal cannot, including commercial vehicles and weight-based registrations.
  • Mail the bottom portion of your renewal card with a check or money order to NCDMV Vehicle Services, PO Box 29620, Raleigh, NC 27626-0620. Do not include cash or card numbers by mail.

If myNCDMV accepts your vehicle, online renewal avoids both the wait at an office and a trip to a kiosk; the $3 convenience fee is the trade-off.
