North Carolina Temporary License Plate

What Is a Temporary License Plate in North Carolina?

North Carolina uses the term temporary registration plate or marker for a short-term document that bridges the purchase of a vehicle and permanent registration. Dealers issue markers at the point of sale; the NCDMV issues temporary license plates directly at its offices for non-dealer transactions.

The Commissioner may also grant a one-time trip permit for moving an unregistered vehicle. Starting October 2025, dealers issuing five or more plates annually must use the print-on-demand temporary registration plate system under G.S. 20-79.1B. All temporary documents are paper documents displayed on the vehicle.

How to Get a Temporary License Plate Online in North Carolina?

No. North Carolina does not offer online issuance of temporary license plates or temporary registration markers for consumers.

The NCDMV online services portal via PayIt handles registration renewals and property tax payments, not initial temporary plates. Consumers must visit a license plate agency or driver license office in person.

The print-on-demand system serves dealers and commission contractors, not individual buyers. Dealers print the plate at the point of sale and hand it to the buyer before delivery.

For any non-dealer purchase, visit an NCDMV license plate agency; for dealer purchases, the dealer handles everything at the point of sale.
